OUR PAST

Busby Bowling Club has been situated at The Crescent in Busby since 1875.  Prior to this location it comprised of a sunken bowling green of two rinks at the Field Works in Field Road Busby.  A Mr Miller who played on this green is believed to have been the instigator in the formation of Busby Bowling Club.

Busby Bowling Club was formed as a joint Stock Company with capital of £400 in £10 shares.  Surplus funds to be disbursed as dividend with a maximum of 5%.  A lease was signed and work on the green at The Crescent began.  The total cost being £615-18-9d.

The green opened on 1 July 1875.  Refreshments consisted of two gallons of spirits, four dozen bottles of beer and two dozen bottles of lemonade.  It wasn't until 1974 when the club was successful in obtaining a license that the bar was installed.

One of the original members of the club was John McAdam, who was president in 1877.An American descendant has donated portraits of him and his wife, Catherine, which can be seen in Busby Library.

During 1991 it was decided that because the clubhouse was structurally unsound and outdated it was time to demolish it completely and have a new one erected in its place.  This facilitates the many and varied functions which take place throughout the calendar year.
